Anna Katalkina is a contemporary still life painter, influenced by the 17th century small Dutch paintings. She uses primarily the indirect approach, which involves applying multiple translucent/semi-opaque glazes of paint on top of opaque underlayers in order to alter values and hues. The light travels through the glazes and reflects off the opaque lower layers back to the viewer’s eye. This technique produces realistic and luminous paintings with a smooth surface. Anna’s work balances the traditional and the modern, the serious and the whimsical, and draws from European travel, music, literature, and the performing arts.

Anna’s paintings are located in private collections in the U.S., France, and the U.K.  She is based in Washington, D.C.
